Discord Servers to Make Friends: How to Find Good Ones
Culture · by Simone Rainieri · 7 min read · Published
To find Discord servers built for making friends, search Discord's own Discover tab and third-party directories such as DISBOARD by interest, city or age band, then join two or three small, active ones and judge them by how welcoming the regulars are. The friendship starts after you leave the busy public channels: a good server gives you a reason to talk to the same people again, and the friends are the ones you end up talking to in smaller conversations, a voice call or a game.
How to find friends on Discord
There are three routes. Discord has a Discover tab in the app for public servers. Directory sites list servers by tag: CommunityOne has a making-friends section, DISBOARD has tags including "adults" and "age-verified", and Top.gg also lists servers. The third route is often the best one: communities you already belong to, such as a game's official server, a hobby group or a city subreddit that links a Discord.
Third-party guides say only servers that opt in appear in Discover, and directories rank by their own systems, such as how often a server is "bumped" or voted for. So a server near the top of a list is often good at promoting itself. It says little about how friendly it is.
What a good server for making friends looks like
- It has been active in the last day, with several different people posting and not just one or two.
- Rules are short and visible, and there is a moderator you can name.
- There is an introductions channel, and people reply to newcomers.
- It runs regular voice events, game nights or watch parties, so there is a reason to return.
- It is small enough to learn names. A few hundred active members is easier than tens of thousands.
- Nobody pressures you into direct messages, and the mods deal with those who do.
Types of server for adults
| Type | Good for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Interest servers (a game, a craft, a fandom, a sport) | Something to talk about every day | Whether people chat outside the topic, since friends need more than the topic |
| City or region servers | People you could meet later, and local tips | How many members are active locally, and whether the server is moderated |
| Age-band servers (18+, 26+, 35+) | Sharing a stage of life | How age is checked, and whether the server calls itself SFW |
| Language and culture servers | Speaking a language you miss | Moderation in that language |
| Study, work and fitness accountability servers | Regular check-ins with the same people | Whether the schedule fits yours |
Age matters here. Some servers are set up for adults only, and some ask for ID or another check through a moderator. Discord itself says it is rolling out age assurance from 24 September 2026, using a model that looks at account age, device data and activity. TechCrunch reports that more than 90% of users will not need to verify, that confirmed adult accounts see no change, and that teen accounts will be blocked from age-restricted servers. That should reduce the number of teenagers in adult spaces. It does not guarantee a server is adults-only, so check the server's own rules.
From lurker to friend
- Read the rules and skim a week of messages so you know the tone.
- Post in the introductions channel with two specific things about you.
- Answer other people's questions in one or two channels, on the same days each week.
- Join a voice event or game night, even if you only listen at first.
- After a few real exchanges with someone, message them privately about something you both mentioned.
- Suggest a small shared plan: a game, a film, a call on Sunday.

Safety settings and red flags
Discord's own safety guidance, in its four steps to a safer account, recommends turning on two-factor authentication, using the direct message spam filter, controlling who can send you friend requests, and blocking anyone unwanted. Blocking removes them from your friends list and stops them sending you direct messages. Its Safety Library also warns against clicking suspicious links and never sharing your account details.
- Someone you met a week ago asks you to move to another app straight away, or to click a link to "verify" your account.
- A new friend has a reason why they cannot video call, and a growing emergency that needs money. The FTC calls a money request from an online friend a scam and says never to send money to someone you have not met in person.
- A member pushes for private messages before they have talked in public channels, or keeps asking about your address, workplace or photos.
- The moderators ignore complaints about the above.
Downsides of Discord for making friends
Discord is noisy. Busy channels scroll faster than you can read, many servers go quiet after a burst of activity, and conversation is often tied to one topic or game. Friendships that start in a server sometimes fade when the topic loses its pull. Notifications can also nag. Mute channels you do not need and keep the ones where you talk to people.
If Discord feels like too much, smaller options exist: one or two people you meet in a server and then chat with elsewhere, a language exchange app, or an app that introduces you to one person at a time. Our list of low-pressure friendship apps compares several, and how private and anonymous friendship apps keep you safe explains how those work.
Key takeaways
Find servers through Discord's Discover tab and directories such as DISBOARD, then judge them by activity, visible moderation and whether people reply to newcomers. Favour small servers with regular voice events. Discord starts rolling out age assurance on 24 September 2026, but still check that an adults-only server enforces its own rules. Move promising conversations to a smaller chat or a call, and treat any request for money as a scam.

What are the best Discord servers to make friends?
There is no fixed best list, because servers change daily. Look for one active in the last day, with clear rules, visible moderators, an introductions channel and regular voice events.
Are there Discord servers for adults?
Yes. Some servers are adults-only or grouped by age band, such as 18+, 26+ and 35+, and some check age through a moderator. Discord is also rolling out age assurance from 24 September 2026, but read each server's own rules.

Talk to the same people in public channels for a while, then message someone privately about something you both mentioned. Suggest a small shared plan, such as a game or a call.
Is it safe to make friends on Discord?
It can be with care. Turn on two-factor authentication, filter direct messages from non-friends, block and report pushy users, and never send money to someone you have not met.
What should I do if Discord feels too noisy?
Mute busy channels, choose smaller servers, or take a promising conversation into a one-to-one chat. Some people prefer an app that introduces one person at a time.
